What is a root canal?
A root canal is the process of removing the pulp of a tooth and filling it with a replacement material. This procedure is usually done when a tooth is infected. The procedure relieves discomfort, swellings, and prevents possible bone damage. The original tooth can usually be saved, however, there are times when a crown or veneer may be required to provide the tooth with needed support.

What is TMJ?
TMJ is the short term for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, a condition characterized by facial pain and the restricted ability to open or move the jaw. TMJ can be caused by grinding teeth, an accident or injury, arthritis, tension or stress, or bite problems. Symptoms may include: pain in the face, neck and shoulder area, pain in the jaw, headaches or neckaches, clicking or "popping" when opening and closing the jaw, difficulty in opening the mouth, pain and pressure in the eyes, ears or sinuses or dizziness. Please consult a dental professional for evaluation if you think you have TMJ.

Dealing with patient pain and/or anxiety
The fear of pain has caused many people to avoid regular dental visits. However, there are many approaches to dealing with these anxieties to help make your visit painless and anxiety-free. We have a staff of caring individuals who will explain your treatment and answer any questions you may have. We also use a variety of anesthetics to reduce or eliminate any pain, provide televisions in every patient room for relaxation, and nitrous oxide, when requested.

How often do I need a checkup?
We recommend a professional cleaning every 3 to 6 months to ensure effective prevention against gum disease and tooth decay.

What is gum disease?
Studies have shown that at least 75% of tooth extractions on adults are due to gum disease. Gum disease is the accumulation of plaque at and beneath the gum line. Left untreated, it is likely to lead to mild, moderate, and ultimately, advanced periodontitus (gum disease) with premature loss of teeth. Daily brushing, flossing, and regular visits to the dentist can help prevent gum disease.

Which type of toothbrush is best?
A soft toothbrush is best for most people and should be replaced every 3 months. Some individuals may have needs which require a mechanical toothbrush.

What is bruxism?
Bruxism is the grinding or gnashing of the teeth, most commonly while the patient is asleep. Please consult your dentist if you think you suffer from bruxism.
